Ella Vickrow time is dead as long as it is being clicked off by little wheels; only when the clock stops does time come to life
Two in the morning. A strong wind whips around the school grounds, howling like a banshee. Heavy, dark clouds hang low overhead, the slightest rumble of thunder hinting toward a storm.
And, just because she can, Ella Vickrow sprints across the grounds, head low, arms pumping. She had picked the lock on the doors-- it was easy, really. She's was surprised at how easy it was. All it took was a bobby pin and a minute or so of jiggling the lock around, and she was free. Ella slows to a walk and looks around, squinting through the almost complete darkness. She wonders where she is.
A few more minutes of walking brings her close to the pool building. She looks up as a flash of lightning streaks across the sky and, after only a moment's hesitation, slips through the door and into the room. She scrabbles at the wall for the light switch, then covers her eyes with one hand as the lights come on suddenly.
When she takes her hand away, a mischievous glint sparks in her eyes. Someone had left the cover off the pool. Without thinking, she tugs off her sweatshirt, leaving only a tank-top over cotton shorts, and dives in.

As per usual, Kayne was wandering the grounds of the Academy. It's not like there was anything else for the student to do at this hour. All the other students were asleep, or so it seemed, and it was far to easy to make his way through the grounds without anyone knowing. He'd been doing it for years now and only once had he been caught.
The boy fished in the pocket of his jeans for a minute before pulling out a large glass marble. His favorite. The marble had reds, blues, and yellows all mixed in it. He'd had it since he realized he had powers, a gift from the nanny he once had. Kayne looked into the darkness, all was calm. He took a deep breath as his feet continued down the path he had walked countless times.
The boy looked up as a flash of lightning came from the clouds. "Beautiful, yet extremely dangerous." The boy chuckled. "A bit like myself? I think so." Kayne wasn't one to beat around the bush about his looks, he knew he looked better than most and wouldn't hesitate to tell you so.
A light in the distance caught his eye. "Well that's mighty unusual." The boy said as he looked at the pool's building. "Maybe someone else was wandering around tonight." He said as he started his way to the building. "Hrmm.." He murmured as he opened the door to the pool. The sound of splashing meant that someone was definitely in the pool. He walked in and saw the girl swimming. "Decided to take a late night dip, huh?" He was with a devilish smirk. "You know, I do believe that is against school policy." Kayne said as he moved closer to the pool. "But for such a pretty young thing, I won't tell." He said with a wink.

Ella Vickrow time is dead as long as it is being clicked off by little wheels; only when the clock stops does time come to life
She drifts toward the bottom, crossing her legs and just sitting there, her hair floating up in crazy spirals around her head. She opens her eyes, the chlorine stinging for a minute at first, but soon she gets used to it. When her lungs are threatening to burst, she untangles her legs and pushes up toward the surface, only to see a boy standing by the edge of the pool. He seems to be about her age, so she's guessing he's a student at the school. No younger than a junior, and probably already a senior.
He face breaks the surface of the water first, a lopsided grin already in place. The boy says something about school rules, or policy or whatever, but honestly? Ella could care less. If some but important figure appears, all she has to do is rewind the clock about five minutes and leave herself a note. Problem solved!
Anyway. Back to the present, and the winking boy.
Ella moves toward the shallow end of the pool (and, coincidentally, the boy) and plants her feet on the concrete bottom, one hand holding the pool wall.
"Aww, that's sweet. You'd be willing to omit the truth for me, a girl you don't know? Even if you did tell, you'd get in trouble for being out after midnight anyway." She runs the fingers of her free hand back through her hair, pulling the dripping locks away from her face.
"I don't think I've seen you around. I'm Ella. And you are…?"

Kayne let out a small laugh. The girl had a smart tongue that's for sure. "I honestly wouldn't care even if you were burning the damn place down. I plan on getting out of this hell hole as soon as I can." The boy shrugged. It was true. He couldn't stand this school, too many useless mutants here. That or human sympathizers both of which should eliminated and hopefully one day Kayne would be doing that.
"Kayne DeRemiro, senior." He said with a small bow. "No, I don't think I've seen you around here either." The boy moved over to a nearby table and chair. "You don't mind do you?" Kayne asked as he sat down and put his feet up on the table. "So what brings you to the pool tonight Ella?" He asked as he rolled the marble across his knuckles. "Late night swimming one of your hobbies?"

She raises her eyebrows at his description of the school, but really isn't all that surprised. With six grade levels of mutants, there's bound to be one or two that aren't here by choice, like Ella is. (This place is her paradise. If she could live here forever, she's be like a bug in a rug, so to speak.) The boy's-- Kayne DeRemiro, as he so helpfully supplies-- parents must be forcing him to be here.
Ella pushes herself out of the pool-- elbows, hands, knees, just like her mom taught her all those years ago-- and lays down on the ground, knees bent at a ninety-degree angle toward the ceiling, hands behind her head, water running off of her skin and pooling around her. "Eh, you know. Restless energy. Couldn't sleep. Thought I'd hide from the storm that's gonna be starting soon in here. But I could ask you the same question, now, couldn't I?"

Kayne's eyebrow raised slightly as he watched the get out the pool. Sure, he believed love was horribly stupid thing but admiring the beauty of a woman was completely different. She was a very pretty, young thing. Most girls did not catch the eye of this boy, but for some reason Ella had. Maybe it was her attitude? Kayne took a deep breath.
"Well, I normally don't sleep for another few hours or so. While the school sleeps I walk. I've learned pretty much the whole layout of the place. Nothing spectacular so far." Kayne added with a small roll of his eyes. "Whatre you here for?" Kayne asked the girl. "Your power of course." The boy wasn't shy to ask what his classmates powers were. It's not like they are here for any other reason. Most of them were completely useless, though he has come across a few that were rather brilliant. His of course was the best of all, in his eyes at least.

She turns her head to look at him, not bothering to shift other than that. "The whole school, huh? All the hidden little nooks and crannies, trap doors, secret passageways?" The girl is kidding, of course. She didn't expect a place such as this to build places to explore-- it was the one thing that disappointed her so far. Before she left New York to come here, (but after Darryl Markswell had found her) she dreamt of wandering the school at night, making a map of all the school's secrets. But she hasn't found any so far. There might be some, but they're all unknown to Ella.
She grins wryly at his abrupt, up front question. No sugar-coating needed. Good. She hates dancing around things (both figuratively and literally). Might as well get it out of the way.
"Time manipulation. Pausing, rewinding, fast-forwarding, slowing. Everything but time travel. And what might you be able to do, Kayne DeRemiro?"

"You could say that." Kayne said as rubbed his chin. "I have found a fee things in my time here. Nothing worth mentioning though" The boy then brought his feet down from the table and crossed his legs. "Well there was that one time when I went into the headmaster's office." Kayne said with a shrug.
"Time manipulation." The boy repeated. "Interesting. Not the best for combat, but could most certainly be useful." He said nodding his head. "Me? Oh it's nothing much. Just this..." Kayne said with a smirk as he tossed the marble up in the air. The peculiar thing was that it didn't fall, it seemed to just be floating in mid air. "Hyalokinesis." The glass then started to warp into several different shapes and colors. "The ability to manipulate glass into any shape, color, or density I desire." He said with another of his patented devilish grins. The glass finally settled back into it's original spherical form levitated in front of Ella's face. "See, I've never been one of those mutants who was scared to use my power. My power makes me superior. I've never understood mutants who hide their power. Why hide something that makes you better than everyone else?"

"Did you sneak in, or were you called in?" she says, still grinning. It's weird-- she has the strangest feeling that the boy sitting not five feet away from her is trying to be intimidating, but she doesn't really care. She's odd that way. The things people do sometimes seem to slide off her like water from a duck.
"I've never had to use it for fighting." she says defensively. "It might be very useful." It's her power! No random boy is going to take it's specialness away from her. She likes what it does. She just isn't too fond of the side effects of using it too long-- headaches, nausea, and eventually sickness.
The colorful marble floats in front of her face, and hovers right between her eyes. In her effort to focus on it, her eyes cross and the marble splits into two hazy copies of itself. She sits up abruptly, not liking how close the glass is to her eyes, and wrestles off her shoes, then peels off her socks. The wetness was really starting to get annoying, but for some reason it doesn't bother her to have a soaked shirt and shorts.
"That one, however, would be good for combat. I can see it now." She ignores, however, the part about it making people better than others. Her mom didn't have a power, and she was one of the best people Ella'd ever met.

Kayne let out a laugh. "Well I have been in there on several different occasions, but the time I am speaking happened because I went in there on my own free time." Kayne said as he waved the marble back over to his hand. The perfect sphere landed soflty in his palm. It was his favorite. Sure, he had glass all in his room. All different shapes and colors, some were marbles others were just shards. He had a small collection nestled safetly under his bed.
"Why yes, it is very useful for combat. One of the best here I might add." Kayne laid his palm out flat and the glass started to shift again, this time becoming slender with a very sharp point on the end. The boy poked his finger on the end. "Sharp." He said with a raised eyebrow. He then let out a small chuckle. "The best part about my power is that if I do fight-" 'Though it's more like /when/ I fight.' "-I barely have to use any brute stregth. You see all these kids with superstrenth or something of the sort. But no, I don't need all that with my power. I can use my mental powers to completely shred anyone to peices before they could even lay a hand on me." He said as the glass then shattered creating hundreds of shards. "I guess you could say I'm a force to be reckoned with." Kayne said with another wave of his hand. The shards then all melded into the solid marble again.

She rolls her eyes at the way he talks, all pomp and circumstance, even more arrogant than Ella herself. She wiggles her toes, making a mental note to cut her toenails soon, and pushes to her feet at the exact moment that the rain starts, pounding down in noisy sheets. She raises her voice to be heard over it.
"That's great and all, but why would you want to fight? it's much more fun to throw words than fists." Though she's completely serious, there's a teasing tone to her voice, and she still sports that lopsided grin that's such a common look for her. Ella runs a hand through her hair, moving her feet the tiniest bit, her heels lining up against the edge of the pool.
"And it's even more fun to have actual, you know, fun."
She spreads out her arms and falls backward into the pool, keeping her eyes open and her mouth grinning. She lets herself drift back to the bottom again, still looking straight at Kayne's wavy figure through the water.

"Fun? What do you mean? Breaking into the pool at the middle of the night? Or better yet how about a rousing game of hide and go seek," Kayne said with a laugh. "Fun is just a waste of time. While people are having their so called 'fun' here they're losing sight on what should really be focused on." He said as the marble rolled across his knuckles again. "Practicing their powers. Working on them, fine tuning them so that when they are needed there won't be even a second of hesitation."
Kayne stood up from his seat as the girl dove into the water, watching her. "This girl has no idea of what I'm capable of. Everyone just thinks I'm some student with a power that's gone to his head. Well, they'll be sorry they thought that soon." Kayne said with a smile as he waved at the girl at the bottom of the pool.

Her shoulders hit the pool bottom first, the softest of touches. The boy's mouth is moving, but all she can hear is the bubbling of the water filter, ringing loudly in her ears. She can, however, get a faint idea of what he's thinking from the expression on his face.
There's definitely something wrong with Kayne. He seems almost… Evil. Well, as close to evil as Ella's ever seen, that is. He certainly has a swollen ego, and seems to have come from money. Designer label jeans, a button down-shirt… If she were anyone other than herself, she might feel inferior in her high-school hoodie (discarded by the door) and ratty old converse (laying by the pool's edge). But, as she's Ella, she doesn't give a second thought to the way she looks.
He waves. Well, she thinks it was a wave, at least. Could have been a rude hand gesture, but whatever. She raises her right hand and waggles her fingers back at him.

Kayne almost had the desire to jump in the pool, almost. That would be too much trouble though, having to take off his clothes, find a towel to steal, and walk back to his down still wet. No that didn't sound like too much fun. Instead he bent down and unlaced his shoes, pulling them off and setting them aside. He then rolled up his pants legs to above his knees. "Don't mind do you?" He asked the girl, who was still underwater.
The boy then sat on the edge of the pool and dropped his legs into the water. "Refreshing." Kayne splashed his feet a bit. "Of course, this pool was nothing compared to the pool at my parents summer house. Massive that thing was, salt water too. Magnificent." He smiled remembering his day at the summer house. No one to ever bother him, days to himself...all to himself. And no humans around for miles. That was the best part. No filthy humans. That was the worst thing about this town. He saw them all the time. Their stench was revolting, at least to him.

Ella pushes back up toward the surface, shaking the water out of her ears just in time to hear the boy (whose feet she just barely managed to avoid smashing into on her way up) start talking about his summer home. Oh, boy. He is a rich, spoiled little prince, isn't he? This school, though it feels like a castle to Ella, must be like a quaint little cottage to him. Might as well at least try to make a friend though. No sense being sarcastic and driving him away.
"That must have been heaven. I've always had to go to the public pool to swim. Maybe that's why I'm more of a runner than a swimmer."
She crosses her arms and rests them on the edge of the pool, her left elbow inches from Kayne's leg, and drops her chin onto her arms.

"Public pools are horrid. The only reason I'm putting my legs in this one is because I know they clean it regularly or else I wouldn't have even stepped a foot into this place. Do you know what people do in pools? It's disgusting." He said with an almost scowl on the boys face. "Back at the house I had the pool guy come every two days to make sure it was as clean as it could be. I miss that place. Sometimes I wish I would never had agreed to come to this place. I down grading my social status it seems. My bedroom now..." Kayne let out a laugh. "It fails in comparison to my old room. I swear I could fit five of the dorms into my room at home. Plus I didn't have to share it with anyone. Had the whole thing to myself. It was wonderful." He said with a sigh. "Just different than I am used to I guess."

She winces mentally. Definitely a spoiled little prince, not to mention a prima donna. He's exactly the kind of guy she tried to avoid back home. But then again, the group she found herself in wasn't the perfect one either-- partiers, binge drinkers, havoc-causers, practically her opposite in every way. But they were her group. Ella's group.
Finding it very hard to keep a civil tongue, she says dryly, "I'm so sorry for you. My entire apartment was the size of this room. And I didn't have a summer home, either." The words 'summer home' had an inflection on them that portrays exactly what the girl is thinking-- houses just for the summer are a waste of money, energy, time, and whatever else you can think of to waste.

"Aw, well. That's unfortunate, everyone should have a summer home. I mean it failed in comparison to my actual house. Well, you couldn't actually call it a house more a mansion really. Cost my parents twenty million, the summer house was only about seven so it's a bit smaller." He said looking over to Ella and nodding.
"And apartment you say? I've never been in one before. I guess the closest thing to that I've been in would be the dorm rooms here. I guess." Kayne wasn't to happy about it, if you couldn't tell. He absolutely hated living here. It was such an insult to how he was raised. No roomservice, no maids, no...anything.

Eugh. Mansion, summer home, millions of dollars… She can't help but laugh.
"You''ve never worked a day in your life, have you?" Ella straightens up, taking her head off of her arms and looking over at Kayne with this expression that says 'you've got to be kidding me, right? You're going to say psyche! now and then you'll drop the whole attitude thing and just be a normal person… Right?!' But she knows it's not going to happen. She's right, though. She can sense it-- he's had everything handed to him on a silver platter (from a butler named Jeeves) since birth. And he's probably never going to have to work-- with a twenty-million-dollar home, he's got it made for the rest of his life. Unless something extremely unfortunate happens, that is.

Kayne laughed at the girl. "Work? Why would I want to do that? I don't /need/ to work." He said looking down on the girl, literally and figuratively. "Working is for the poor. I am far from poor so why should I work? I pay people to work for me. If anything people should be happy I'm rich. I give them jobs. You do the work I don't want to do and I give you something for your troubles. I don't see the problem in that, do you?" The boy asked with a snarky tone.
"You may want to work hard for your money, but id rather not. I'd rather spend summers in cancun or France or maybe even the Swiss alps. Wouldn't you if you could? Or would you rather slave away at some dead beat job. I think the answer is pretty clear to me"

She just gapes at him for a minute, speechless. He really doesn't have a heart, does he? Having everything you'd ever want wouldn't be enjoyable. If you can just ask for something and have it appear magically in front of you, then where's the accomplishment? Where's the sense of worth, of a job well done? Suddenly hating the fact that he's towering above her, she pushes out of the water and takes the few steps over to her shoes.
"I would much rather be back at home at the crappy little diner where I worked than live like you do." she snarls, tugging her socks back over her feet with mild difficulty. She steps into her shoes and pulls on her hoodie.
Ella walks over to the door, head held high, and tugs on the handle. The rain pours inside pounding on the concrete floor. Thunder booms overhead. Lightning splits the sky every few seconds. Not bothering to shut the door behind her, she walks out into the downpour.

Kayne glared at the girl. "Then you must be delusional if you want to work like that. Deep down you wish you had what I do. Everyone does. You were just one of the unfortunate many that just got the crap end of the stick. Just gunna have a crappy job living in some Podunk town, while I on the other hand live life to it's fullest. Getting anything I want and not have to dream about getting it. You're just jealous. That's all it is." He said laughing as she walked out the door.
The boy causually stood up from the pool, unrolled his pants and walked to his shoes and socks. "Poor thing. I almost feel sorry for her. Almost." Kayne then put on his socks and shoes. "Hell, I'm gunna get soaked." He said as he looked up to the ceiling. "Maybe it wouldn't have hurt to go swimming after all." He walked over to the door and tool a deep breath. "Shouldve brought an umbrella" Kayne said as he opened the door and walked to the school.

It irritates her to no end that he insults New York, of all places! It's certainly not some little barely-on-the-map town. But, like not wanting to get into a full-on fight, she just puts her head down and races through the rain.
It's hard to tell where to step when the water pouring from the sky is obscuring everything, and she almost falls on a number of occasions, but manages to keep her balance for the most part.
After a few minutes of running, she arrives back at the High Academy, dripping all over the porch, and is relieved to find the doors still unlocked. Her footsteps will no doubt make a trail on the carpet back up to her dorm, but there's no going around that.
